From the ROCA Council of Bishops We wish to advise all parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia that the Monastery of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos in Preston Hollow, NY has acquired additional property with a church building and a house. Father hieromonk Damian exhausted his entire inheritance bequest to him by his deceased mother to purchase this property, hoping to found a man's monastery there under the omophorium of Metropolitan Vitaly. Such a monastery is acutely needed after the Jordanville monastery strayed from true path. Regretfully, town government refused to grant a tax exemption for this additional property (in spite of the fact that the monastery received tax exemption in the 1980's). Now they request that a separate application for tax relief is submitted after the monastery pays taxes for the additional property for fiscal years 2003 and 2004. These taxes amount to $14,000. Due to these unexpected expenditures, the monastery is facing great difficulties.
